Glossary Emission

Emission

New units added to what a chain or contract reports as total supply — issuance, minting, block rewards and rebases, but not unlocks, which move tokens that already exist from a locked allocation into float.

Why it matters

Nobody announces a block reward, so the issuing half of supply goes unread while every burn is a press release — and on most tokens the issuing half is the larger number. An emission rate is also not a property of a token: it can be a fixed schedule, a formula over how many people stake, a governed parameter, or whatever the holder of a mint role does next, and only the first of those cannot be changed by anybody. Solana rewrote its schedule on 28 August 2026 by a margin of a third of a percentage point of validator stake.
